August 8: Introduction to Sterling Metrics’ Social Lending Program
Come out for an info session about Sterling Metrics, a New Mexico-based startup focused on assisting local small businesses attain the necessary capital for improvements, and/or expansion plans. The event takes place from 5:30–6:30 p.m. at ProjectY.
August 9: International Coworking Day
In honor of International Coworking Day, stop by ProjectY for free coworking from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Get a taste of what coworking is about, connect with other members, and have some free coffee and high-speed WiFi.

August 10–11: Canes of Power
In August, 1680, the Pueblos rose up and chased the Spanish out of what is now New Mexico. The film Canes of Power tells about the canes presented to the Pueblo governors that signify their authority and sovereignty. Watch the film at Bandelier National Monument.
August 11–13: Los Alamos County Fair & Rodeo
From a parade to a craft fair to a rodeo, there’s plenty to do this weekend. Check out the complete schedule of events here.
August 12: Scientist in the Spotlight—fungi and forecasting disease
Join Renee Johansen, with the Lab’s Bioenergy and Biome Science group, as she shares information on the strange world of fungi. Nick Generous, with the Lab's Information Systems and Modeling group, will also be available to chat about how new social media tools help researchers improve disease forecasting. The event takes place at the Bradbury Science Museum from 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
August 17: Office hours with NM Economic Development Department
The Northern New Mexico community can meet one-on-one with Ryan Eustice, Community Business & Rural Development Team Region 2 Representative for the State of New Mexico Economic Development Department during these open office hours (9:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.) at Project Y.
August 17: Science on Tap—what’s shocking about lightning?
Sip local wine or beer, have a bite to eat, and listen to Laboratory scientists Tess Light and Tim Hamlin, both with the Lab’s Space and Remote Sensing Group. The talk starts at 5:30 p.m. at UnQuarked in Central Park Square in Los Alamos.
August 18–20: Hubbell Trading Post Navajo Rug Trunk Show
Bandelier National Monument hosts this event from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. at the visitors’ center. Daily rug talks and weaving demonstrations occur at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

August 25: National Park Founders Day
Get into Bandelier National Monument and Valles Caldera National Preserve at no charge.
August 25: Robotics Night
Stop by the Bradbury Science Museum for fun with regional robotics teams and their programmable friends. The event will be 5–8 p.m., and some teams will even provide an opportunity for visitors to manipulate the robots themselves.
August 26: Fiesta Los Alamos!
Fiesta tickets include a gourmet Mexican dinner buffet and drinks by the Blue Window Bistro, live mariachi music, folkloric dance performances, silent and live auctions, all in the festive atmosphere of Fuller Lodge from 5–9 p.m.

Lab volunteers
Los Alamos National Laboratory’s participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) events is made possible with support from the Department of Energy through the Laboratory’s Science Education Community Service Time Program. To request STEM experts, complete a brief online request form.
Los Alamos experts and volunteers can also be requested through the Laboratory’s Volunteer Program, which partners with the national Volunteer Match initiative.
