April 8: Scientist in the Spotlight

Science Ambassadors present for another fun Saturday at the Bradbury Science Museum from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Mandie Gehring will shed light on how fission works with demonstrations to help you better understand the physics of chain reactions, and Jeff Favorite will demonstrate many different parabolas while juggling with his friend Lynn Wysocki Smith.

April 8, 22: Switching Gears: The Next Chapter in Your Life

This two-day workshop at UNM-LA helps you plan now how to live well in retirement. Register at losalamos.unm.edu/community-education/.

Switching Gears was inspired by the imminent wave of Laboratory retirees. Local resources already address the financial aspects of preparing for retirement, so this course focuses on encouraging people to remain active and connected to their community.

April 9: Run for Her Life

The seventh annual Run for Her Life to fight breast cancer kicks off at 9 a.m. at East Park in Los Alamos. Choose from a 5K or 10K distance.

April 10–12: Books Are Fun Book Fair

Support the community while shopping for discounted books, music, and much more at the next Books Are Fun book fair in the Laboratory’s Otowi Building. Fifteen percent of all proceeds will benefit the United Way of Northern New Mexico and United Way of Santa Fe County. Book fair hours are:

    •    10:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday, April 10
    •    9 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday, April 11
    •    9 a.m.-3 p.m., Wednesday, April 12

Every Tuesday at noon, bring your lunch to ProjectY, watch a TED talk, and discuss. See each week’s topic here.

April 14: Earth Day Trails Tour

The public is invited to a 3.5-mile hike of Lower Water Canyon and Lion’s Cave Trails with Los Alamos National Laboratory’ Trails Management Program. Learn about the biological, cultural and geologic elements along these trails from Laboratory subject matter experts. Reserve a spot by emailing trails@lanl.gov.

April 16: Easter

April 16: 2017 Wildfire - Elks Annual Easter Egg Hunt

More than just an egg hunt, this event at Ashely Pond from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. features Smokey the Bear, bouncy houses, a bicycle rodeo, prizes and more.

April 16: Egg Splash

Kids 16 and under can gather some of the hundreds of floating eggs (and prizes) at the Aquatic Center from 1–2 p.m.

April 16: Egg Hunt at the Golf Course

The festivities include games, jump houses, face painting, prizes and more for ages 1-12, from 1–3 p.m. at 4290 Diamond Dr.

April 18: New Mexico High Tech Roundtable

This event focuses on state incentives for high-tech businesses. Moderator Theresa Barela will highlight updates from the recently concluded legislative session. The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at ProjectY and will conclude with a facilitated brainstorming session around new incentives to help high-tech businesses.

April 19: Earth Day Talk

At TEDxLANL two years ago, Emma Cohen, with the Laboratory’s Environmental Stewardship group, presented a short talk titled “How to save a mermaid.” Focusing on issues such as “microtrash” (think plastic drinking straws) and ways to avoid disposable “dinnerware,” you too can learn how you can save the mermaids by attending this talk. The talk begins at 2 p.m. in the Bradbury Science Museum.

April 20: Business Expo and Job Fair

Build connections with business owners and customers, and build brand recognition in Santa Fe. The largest business-to-business expo in Northern New Mexico is open to the public and takes place at the Santa Fe Convention Center from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. 

April 20: Science on Tap

Sip local wine or beer, have a bite to eat, and listen to Chris Morris, of the Lab’s Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, talk about how our scientists are helping assess the status of the nuclear fuel inside the damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The event is held at UnQuarked in Central Park Square in Los Alamos at 5:30 p.m.

April 22: Los Alamos Chamber Gala

This semi-formal evening of dining and dancing to ’60s music also features cocktails and a silent auction. Wear your retro attire to Fuller Lodge, which will be transformed into a Las Vegas night club.

April 22: March for Science

The March for Science-Santa Fe is an event that unites with more than 350 other March for Science events worldwide to champion science as a pillar for the advancement of human knowledge, progress, and prosperity. The march begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Plaza and finishes on the east side of the state Capitol building with a rally and science expo from 11–2 p.m. Speakers will offer ways to support science and community organizations will have demos and activity booths.

April 22: Earth Day Festival

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center hosts its free annual Earth Day Festival from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Los Alamos Nature Center. Guests can enjoy food, activities, informational booths, and entertainment.

April 29: Dog Jog

Head to White Rock’s Rover Park for the annual Dog Jog, which kicks off at 9 a.m. (registration begins at 8 a.m.) The 3.5 or 5K event is the primary fundraiser for the nonprofit Los Alamos Friends of the Shelter. You don’t need a dog to participate, although shelter dogs are available to borrow on a first-come basis.

Lab volunteers

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) events is made possible with support from the Department of Energy through the Laboratory’s Science Education Community Service Time Program. To request STEM experts, complete a brief online request form.

Los Alamos experts and volunteers can also be requested through the Laboratory’s Volunteer Program, which partners with the national Volunteer Match initiative.
