March 2: Funding Your Innovative Idea

This workshop at ProjectY will explain how the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs can help fund your innovative idea. Please register in advance.

March 2, 16, 24: VAF workshops

Three EDA-funded workshops for Venture Acceleration Fund (VAF) applicants have been scheduled for March: Marketing Strategy and Assessment (March 2), Finance for Startups (March 16), and Pitch Workshop (March 24). Learn more here.

March 4: Middle School Regional Science Bowl

This Jeopardy-like event is for middle-school students who have a strong interest in mathematics and science. Teams consist of four students; National Science Bowl rules apply. The event takes place at Highland High School in Albuquerque.

March 7: Website Building

Learn the order of where to start, model, and create components of your website. This event takes place from 6–8 p.m. at the Santa Fe Business Incubator.

March 8: Pinterest for Strong Visual Impact

Create a Pinterest account, discuss the general parts of Pinterest, create a board, add pins, get followers, and more. This event takes place at the Santa Fe Business Incubator from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

March 9: Expanding Your Horizons 2017 Student Technical Workshop

A Laboratory-sponsored event for fifth- through eighth-grade girls in Northern New Mexico, Expanding Your Horizons aims to cultivate an interest in professions such as science and math. Participants build connections with role models as they attend workshops and presentations with women working in traditionally male occupations. The event takes place at the Santa Fe Convention Center.

March 10: Last day to order Daffodils for Hospice

Purchase a single bunch, small vase, or large vase of daffodils to support Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Services. Flowers will be delivered on Saturday, March 11. See lavns.com for details.

March 11: RoboRave Rally and Science Showdown

This exciting day of science and technology features student robot competitions, demonstrations, hands-on science activities, and micro-drone fights. The event takes place from 9 a.m.­–3 p.m. in the Eagle Memorial Gymnasium at Northern New Mexico College in Española.

March 11: Science Literacy

Presented by Santa Fe Science Initiative and Santa Fe Public Schools, this event will enhance student comprehension strategies and confidence navigating complex informational text. The event is held from 8:30 a.m.–noon at Acequia Madre Elementary. Learn more here.

March 11: Scientist in the Spotlight

Science Ambassador Nathan DeBardeleben, with the Lab’s High Performance Computing Design group, will discuss how computer memory stores its ones and zeros and how a neutron bouncing through the memory could cause information corruption. Linda Anderman, with the Bradbury Science Museum, will present the advantages of the metric system. The event is part of the “Scientist in the Spotlight” series, which is held every second Saturday from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Bradbury.

March 14: Explore WIX

Create your own website using the very easy drag-and-drop WIX platform. The event takes place 5:30–8:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe Business Incubator.

March 14–17: Frontiers in Science

This free lecture series takes place in three locations over three days and shares the Laboratory’s cutting-edge research with surrounding communities. In this series, Laboratory Fellow David S. Moore will explore various kinds of explosions, what is needed for a detonation, and what's current in modeling of detonations.

• March 14: James A. Little Theater in Santa Fe, 7 p.m.
• March 15: New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque, 7 p.m.
• March 17: Los Alamos High School Smith  Auditorium in Los Alamos, 7 p.m.

Explosions are the focus of the Frontiers in Science lecture series, which takes place in Albuquerque, Los Alamos, and Santa Fe.

March 16: Science on Tap

Sip local wine or beer, have a bite to eat, and learn some science. The talk takes place at UnQuarked in Los Alamos and features Gus Sinnis, who will discuss the technology that attracts more than 500 researchers to Los Alamos each year.

March 18: Red and Black Ball

Don't miss the YMCA's annual fundraiser to benefit youth programs and the Los Alamos and Española Teen Centers. This year's theme is Havana Nights, and guests are encouraged to dress accordingly. Tickets to this event, held at Buffalo Thunder Resort, can be purchased here.

March 21: Everyone Does IT Kickoff Event

Uniting the various Lab-sponsored groups and community advocates that teach youth about technology, Everyone Does IT features activities that encourage students (grades 2 and up) and adults to learn to code and to pursue careers in information technology. This is the first event in an ongoing effort to encourage diversity (especially girls and minorities) in IT fields. This free event runs from 5:30–7 p.m. at the Los Alamos Nature Center. Elise Elfman from the Lab’s 3D animation Visible Team is one of the IT experts who will demo activities at the inaugural Everyone Does IT event on March 21.

March 25: Chili Bowl Cookoff

The 11^th annual event takes place at Santa Claran Casino Special Events Center from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. The day of entertainment and chili tasting benefits the San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen.

March 28: For profit or not-for-profit?

In this workshop, learn the differences between for-profits and nonprofits. This event takes place 5:30–8:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe Business Incubator.

April 8, 22: Switching Gears: The Next Chapter in Your Life

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) events is made possible with support from the Department of Energy through the Laboratory’s Science Education Community Service Time Program. To request STEM experts, complete a brief online request form.

Los Alamos experts and volunteers can also be requested through the Laboratory’s Volunteer Program, which partners with the national Volunteer Match initiative.
