Los Alamos National Laboratory offers employees a comprehensive benefits package with plans that cover our employee’s health and welfare, retirement, financial, fitness and wellness needs.

Eligibility Requirements

The Laboratory offers an extensive benefits package to full and part time employees.

Casual student employees (excluding High School Co-op, Lab Associates and Craft Employees) are eligible to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) medical plan.

Casual student employees with at least a Bachelor’s Degree are also eligible to participate in the Triad 401(k) Plan.

Note: if you are currently covered in any Lab plan, including the retiree plans, contact the Benefits Office for assistance with coordination of coverage.

Eligible family members

The Lab requires supporting documentation to verify the relationship(s) of your enrolled dependents.

Domestic partner coverage

The Lab offers coverage to same-sex and opposite-sex domestic partners.

Medical Insurance

Employees have the choice between two medical plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBS). Both medical plans offer free preventive care and in-and out-of-network coverage from the same network of BCBS providers.

High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)

A more flexible plan that gives consumers the ability to select the providers that offer the maximum value. The plan:

  • Has higher annual deductibles, but lower monthly premiums.
  • Does not pay until after the annual deductible has been met, but
  • meets the IRS requirements to qualify for the optional Health Savings Account (HSA) to set aside pre-tax dollars for eligible healthcare expenses to use towards the deductible.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

A traditional medical plan with copays and co-insurance for covered services. The plan:

  • Offers lower annual deductibles, but with higher monthly premiums.
  • Meets the IRS requirements to qualify for the optional Health Care Reimbursement
    Account (HCRA) to set aside pre-tax dollars for eligible healthcare expenses

Dental Insurance

Dental coverage is offered through Delta Dental of New Mexico. The plan covers preventative care exams, restorative work, and other orthodontic services. Delta Dental in-network preferred providers offer the best value for covered services.

Vision Insurance

Vision coverage is offered through Davis Vision. The plan covers exams, contacts, lenses and frames. Participants can use any provider, but Davis Vision network providers offer the best value for covered services. Frames, lenses and contacts can also be purchased online.

Life Insurance

Life insurance, offered through MetLife, provides a financial benefit to the named beneficiary(ies) in the event of the covered individual’s death.

Basic Life

Basic Life insurance coverage provides 1 times your annual earnings, rounded to the next highest $1,000 if not a multiple of $1,000, with a minimum of $5,000 and a maximum of $50,000.

The premiums for Basic Life insurance are paid by the Laboratory. Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in this coverage.

Supplemental Life

If you need coverage in addition to Basic Life insurance, the Laboratory offers Supplemental Life insurance. The Supplemental Life plan offers you the flexibility to select the appropriate amount of coverage for you and your family.

You can select coverage from 1 to 8* times your annual earnings. The cost for this coverage is based on your age, salary and the amount of coverage you select.

Dependent Life

Dependent Life provides a financial benefit to you in the event you experience the loss of a spouse/domestic partner or child.

The cost of coverage is based on the covered dependents, the plan, and the coverage level you select.

Business Travel Accident Insurance

Employees whose duties include business travel are also automatically covered for $100,000 in travel accident insurance under a separate policy. Premiums are paid by the Laboratory.

AD&D Insurance

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance protects you and your family from the unforeseen financial hardship of an accident that causes death, dismemberment, paralysis, or loss of sight, speech, or hearing. AD&D offered through MetLife includes coverage levels range from $50,000 to $500,000 with affordable semimonthly premiums.

Disability Coverage

Short-term and long-term disability coverages are offered though MetLife. These income protection plans will pay a percentage of your salary if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. The premiums for these plans will be fully paid for by Triad.

Short-term disability (employer paid)

This coverage pays a benefit of 100% of your base salary, for the first 7 weeks, then the benefits reduces to 60% for the remaining benefit period. Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in this coverage. The premiums for short-term disability are paid for by the Lab. 

Long-term disability (employer paid)

This disability coverage pays up to a maximum of $15,000 per month for disabilities exceeding 26 weeks. Enrollment for this plan is also automatic.

PTO is accrued per pay period based on years of service, with new employees able to accrue 200 hours per year. The Lab also offers Compassionate Care Leave, Maternal/Parental Leave and Leave for Professional Development.

Retirement Plan

A best-in-class 401(k) Retirement Plan is offered by Fidelity to help employees save and invest for future financial goals. The Plan allows for employees to save on a pre-tax, Roth and after-tax basis. Diverse, low-cost investment options are available.

401(k)

The Lab offers employees a 401(k) retirement plan that allows you to save and invest a piece of your paycheck before taxes are taken out. Taxes are not paid until the money is distributed to you. Employees that meet the annual pre-tax contribution limit can elect to continue contributions on an after-tax basis.

Roth 401(k)

LANL offers a Roth 401(k) retirement savings option to employees who participate in the LANL 401(k) Retirement Plan. The Roth 401(k) option differs from a traditional 401(k) in two specific ways:

  • Contributions are made on an after-tax basis.
  • There are limits on when withdrawals from the account may begin after retirement.

Company match

The Lab will match your contributions to the 401(k) and Roth 401(k) up to 6% of your eligible compensation per pay period.

You may contribute 1% to 50% of your eligible compensation towards those plans if you choose, but the dollar-for-dollar match is limited to 6% of your eligible compensation and will be made on a pre-tax basis regardless of the plans (or combination of plans) to which you contribute.

Non-elective employer contribution

In addition to the company match, you will also receive an annual non-elective employer contribution to your 401(k) plan. The amount of the non-elective employer contribution is based on your years of service and your eligible compensation:

Health & Fitness Programs

A variety of programs to help employees establish and maintain good health are available, as well as on site Wellness Centers, and fitness classes. 

The Laboratory also an incentivised wellness program to help our employees achieve and maintain good health, managed by Virgin Pulse.  This program is also available to non-employee spouses/domestic partners. Employees and non-employee spouses/domestic partners can now embark on their fitness journey together. Financial incentives are only earned for those employees and non-employee spouse/domestic partners enrolled in the Laboratory medical plan.

Education Assistance
