The independent nonprofit LANL Foundation has announced this year’s recipients of four-year undergraduate degree scholarships. More than 130 Northern New Mexico students pursuing bachelor’s degrees will receive 147 scholarships totaling a record-breaking $1,030,000.

The four-year undergraduate scholarships, largely funded by donations from Laboratory employees, are open to students pursuing a degree in any field of study. The scholarships are open to every student from the region, and range from $1,000 for a single year up to $20,000 over four years. Recipients are selected based on a demonstrated commitment to academic achievement, leadership and service.

This year, three exceptional students were awarded the prestigious $20,000 Gold Scholarship:

  • Amelia Martinez, Taos Academy
  • Hanbi Park, Santa Fe High School
  • Uxue Sansinea, Los Alamos High School

The Foundation received nearly $900,000 in new scholarship funding this year, partly thanks to the establishment of new funds, including the Dr. Charles McMillan Tribute Fund, and a scholarship for veterans and their families.

“We are deeply grateful for the support of our donors and partners who make this scholarship program possible,” says Mike Ammerman, scholarship program director at the LANL Foundation. “With each new fund and every dollar donated, we are able to deepen our impact and lift up more students from Northern New Mexico who seek to improve their lives through higher education.”

More than scholarships

LANL Scholars also unlock resources designed to help them succeed in college and beyond. These include access to:

  • On-campus support programs for first-year and transfer students at the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University
  • The LANL Scholars Professional Mentorship Program, connecting students with industry professionals who provide guidance, career advice and networking support
  • Paid summer internships at Los Alamos National Laboratory, with students matched to mentors in their fields of interest for hands-on experience in STEM and other disciplines

A history of giving

Since 1999, LANL Foundation has awarded more than 2,600 scholarships totaling over $13 million. These scholarships are made possible through the generosity of the Laboratory workforce, Laboratory operator Triad National Security, and community members who entrust the LAESF Advisory Committee and the LANL Foundation to administer their named and endowed scholarship funds.
