Energy production is one of the most salient and time-sensitive endeavors that the United States undertakes to ensure an independent and responsible source of energy for our country. In the Applied Energy Office at Los Alamos National Laboratory, I spend my days considering the best and most feasible energy options for the United States and for the state of New Mexico. Los Alamos National Laboratory, together with the State of New Mexico, other national laboratories, academia, and industry, leads cutting-edge research to make this possible. At Los Alamos, we are researching the most innovative technologies to create more energy options.
Nuclear energy has the highest yield potential of any energy source, and current research focuses on advancing small modular reactor technologies as well as increasing sustainability, safety, and efficiency. A robust network of nuclear energy is an efficient and safe pathway to contribute to future energy needs of the United States, and our scientists are researching how to make nuclear energy as economically viable and efficient as possible. National laboratory science is allowing for huge leaps in nuclear energy so that it can come to market faster, cheaper and safer.
