In the Event of an Evacuation

Processes and procedures are in place should a wildfire happen to advance.

  • In case of an evacuation of the Laboratory site due to the proximity of a wildfire, facilities will be put through a standardized “safe shutdown” process to ensure safety and security of each building, according to its processes and materials on hand.
  • Every available resource will be applied in order to protect our facilities and employees.
  • Approximately 1,200 essential staff will stay on-site to safeguard facilities, systems, utilities and protect all Laboratory assets.
  • Laboratory facilities are designed and operated to protect personnel and materials.
  • Radiological and other potentially hazardous materials are stored in containers that are engineered and tested to withstand extreme environments, including heat from fire.
  • Specialized ventilation systems have pre-filters to capture any particulate from smoke before reaching the safety system-credited HEPA filters.
