The Quantum Institute brings together researchers, mission stakeholders, and collaborators to push the frontiers of quantum science. We foster interdisciplinary work, support the next generation of quantum scientists, and advance LANL’s role as a national quantum leader.
The Quantum Institute mission is to
In June 2001, a small working group of quantum information, science, and technology (QIST) researchers from C, CCS, MST, NIS, P and T divisions was chartered to develop a plan to create a cohesive Lab-wide QIST program and possibly an institute to support this exciting field. The working group formed the Quantum Institute and a visitor program; garnered funding to refurbish labs, offices, and a briefing center; and identified a steering committee and executive board to guide the Institute.
In December 2002, then Laboratory Director John Browne officially dedicated the Quantum Institute. The steering committee subsequently announced an interim science director and an executive director. The Quantum Institute became an Institutional Center in 2005.
The area of quantum information, science, and technology is rapidly evolving with important applications in the areas of quantum cryptography, quantum computing, quantum metrology, and advanced quantum-based sensors, some of which are directly relevant to the Laboratory's national security mission.
