The 29th Annual HAZMAT Challenge
August 18-22, 2025
The Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Challenge is an annual training event held at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and hosted by the Emergency Management Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The 2025 Hazmat Challenge will be conducted in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 and NFPA 470 so that training certification to capture:
- Refresher credit
- Continuous Education Units
- Competencies
- Job Performance Requirements
to meet Hazardous Materials Technician qualification standards.
For the past 28 years HAZMAT teams have joined the challenge for a chance to network with one another, practice technical skills, and learn new HAZMAT techniques under realistic conditions in a safe environment. The HAZMAT Challenge is an event where you can have fun and forget you are learning at the same time.
Vehicles, trucks, tankers, and rail cars are used in some of the props to mimic real-life hazardous material situations. Past Challenge scenarios have included:
- Drug laboratory or chemical hazard identification
- Complex valve trees
- Confined space rescue
- Compressed gas leaks
- Rail car scenarios
- Pressurized drum opening
- Stinger operations
- Damming/diking response from an overturned tanker
- Drum overpacking
- Radiological incidents
- Transportation accidents
Registration
Team slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis with registration limited to one team per organization.
There is to be a MAX of 5 participants per team. Additional people may register but will only be able to observe the event.
