The Weapon Verification and Validation Division (V-DO) verifies that weapon designs meet requirements and validates that the designs function as intended, ensuring successful completion of investigations, qualification tests, and evaluations. V Division accomplishes the verification and validation of weapons designs through assembly, non-destructive evaluation, test design and planning, and test execution.
Experimental Device Engineering and Assembly (V-5) is LANL's premier engineering group specializing in assembling experimental weapon test devices. Its team of engineers, technicians, and specialists safely delivers high-quality assemblies that support Design Agency research in weapon physics and system engineering, directly contributing to the Nation’s Stockpile Stewardship program.
Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation (V-6) specializes in advanced state-of-the-art inspection and non-destructive testing technologies in support of the nuclear weapons stockpile. The group applies expertise in X-ray and neutron radiography, computed tomography, ultrasonics, spectroscopy, eddy current testing, and other nondestructive testing techniques.
Test Engineering (V-14) provides hands-on test engineering supporting weapons stockpile R&D, production, nonproliferation, and other national security programs. The group specializes in mechanical, structural, thermal, vibration, shock, blast, instrumentation, and data analysis—from material samples to full weapon assemblies.
Weapons Test Execution (V-21) plans and oversees the execution of weapon testing. V-21 supports experimental evaluation across many domains including mechanical, thermal, hydrodynamic, and sub-critical testing. The group leverages capabilities across the complex, integrating experimental expertise to field large-scale joint tests with weapon development partners, including Sandia National Laboratories, Lockheed Martin, and others.
