Analytical Earth Science

Experimental approaches to natural systems

The Analytical Earth Science group uses laboratory exercises, field observations, and experiments to strengthen national security through the science of signatures and complex natural and engineered systems.

Our group focuses on problems across a range of scales to understand how Earth systems and processes can be harnessed to most effectively for national security. We are responsible for much of the geochemistry and hazard reduction sciences within the Earth and Environmental Sciences division. There are three teams within our group.

  • Geochemistry & Geomaterials Research Laboratory Team

The Geochemistry & Geomaterials Research Laboratory team uses aqueous, gas, or geomaterials samples to study signatures present in different types of environments and situations. This work is especially crucial for difficult sensing environments with limited ground truth data, and it can be used for everything from explosion detection to underground chemical transport and storage.

  • Radionuclide Geochemistry Team

The Radionuclide Geochemistry team uses their expertise in chemical use, processing, and extraction techniques to create opportunities in the fields of critical minerals and energy. This work supports the Lab’s national security mission through energy resilience and the acquisition of high-value materials. Further, the team applies their expertise in radionuclide transport in Earth materials to support programs in spent fuel storage and non-proliferation science.

  • Spatial Science to Enhance National Security (SSENS) Team

The SSENS team conducts and leads groundbreaking science at the intersection of remote sensing, uncrewed aircraft systems, and traditional geology. The team supports a diverse set of mission spaces, with primary focuses in detecting and characterizing the signatures of non-proliferation.
