Simulation, Computation and Theory

Applying the Scientific Method to this Century's Complex Systems with this Century's Tools

World-class capabilities and research in Theory, Simulation, and Computation to advance science and national security

The cutting-edge work of the Simulation, Computation and Theory Directorate (ALDSCT) is central to improved understanding, control, and prediction of complex natural and engineered systems. Through multidisciplinary co-design we engage theory, experiment, and observation to explore, develop and deploy world-class, robust computational tools, infrastructure, and capabilities.

Applying Science-Based Prediction

We apply science-based prediction to all aspects of the nuclear weapon enterprise and beyond, using advanced theory, modeling and simulation tools, including AI.

We support other current and emerging national security missions, such as global security challenges, quantum science, applied energy, climate, infrastructure resilience, nano S&T, and biological science, as well as most science frontiers from biophysics to astrophysics.
