Applied Machine Learning Fellowship

The Applied Machine Learning Summer Research Fellowship is an intense 10-week program that begins around the beginning of June each summer. The program is aimed at providing graduate students with a solid foundation in modern machine learning through applications of importance to the National Lab and the world. This is a paid fellowship that includes reimbursement for travel expenses.

Research Fellows will learn in a hands-on fashion by engaging in scientific research using machine learning. Research will be guided by mentors with machine learning, scientific, and computational expertise. Students will work on high performance computing clusters, apply practical and state-of-the-art machine learning tools, and gain experience in communicating their work through discussions and presentations. Students will attend seminars by Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers and external visitors. We aim for high-impact summer projects that will lead to peer-reviewed, co-authored publications.

Students

This multidisciplinary program is designed for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students from all science, math, computer science, and technology fields who are seeking to incorporate machine learning into their research careers. As a general guideline, students should have a background in one of the following: probability theory, statistical methods, algorithms, or statistical learning. Experience with programming and machine learning packages is encouraged. Specific skills needed for each project are listed in the project descriptions and the application form asks which projects you are most interested in.

Frequently Asked Questions

In general, Research Fellows are not required to be U.S. citizens; if a particular project has such a requirement (which is rare), it will be noted clearly in the project description. However, it is necessary for all employees to have work authorization. Regardless of citizenship, Los Alamos National Laboratory will not sponsor a work visa for this summer program. Generally, this means that applicants should already have a U.S. visa that allows them to work as an intern (such as a student visa with CPT).

Unfortunately, our Summer Research Fellowship is only for students. The Laboratory does not generally hire non-students for short-term research positions. The Lab does sponsor some workshops and conferences which might be of interest to postdocs both for the technical content and for networking with The Lab and other national lab scientists.

If you are planning to continue your studies, then you are eligible. If you will no longer be a student, then you might not be eligible for this fellowship, and it might not be in your best interest because the student fellowship does not provide longer-term employment at The Laboratory. However, if you apply and it turns out that you are a strong candidate for one of the research projects but cannot do the student fellowship, then at least we have your application package on file and you might be contacted by a Lab researcher outside of the fellowship program.

We aim to open the application by December of the preceding year, and generally stop accepting applications sometime in January. 

Each project mentor team will review applications after the application deadline. We anticipate that selected students will receive informal offers no later than the first of March. Final decisions will be sent to all applicants once each project team has confirmed that their selected student will be joining the AML fellowship.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be accepted to or enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • Must have and maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher.
  • Must be available to live and work in the United States.
