Mechanical and Thermal Engineering (E-1) partners with programs and innovators to deliver applied mechanical and thermal engineering solutions for LANL’s core national security missions and to a variety of complementary programs. Our mechanical engineers, technologists, technicians, and designers have a passion for solving challenging technical problems.

Our staff has experience working with and modifying a variety of unique systems: 

• Electromagnetic systems
• Pulsed power systems
• Vacuum systems
• Cryogenic systems
• Pressure vessels
• Spacecraft mechanical hardware
• Heat transfer systems
• Particle accelerator systems
• Nuclear facility infrastructure

Our innovative work in the following areas has resulted in several patented technologies and license agreements:

• Mechanical hardware design and testing
• Mechanical, thermal, fluid, and radio-frequency engineering analysis
• High-temperature heat pipes
• Nuclear material container development

• Machine learning (hardware and software)

We have a strong student pipeline program. Each summer we host different types of students, providing them with challenging work that supports the national security mission. We also provide the students with mentorship from experts in their fields, and training to help them develop their skills.
