Learn about our facility

The TA-66 facility offers classroom space adjacent to laboratories that supports a wide range of activities with radiological and nuclear materials, including uranium and plutonium, at the Security CAT III level amounts.

All Nuclear Material (NM) is contained in intrinsically sealed containers resulting in a contamination free environment with quick and easy access.

The 8,600 sq. ft. facility provides ample room for lectures and hands-on training, with two classrooms, laboratories, and meeting rooms, for up to 24 participants.

LANL has all the necessary resources to conduct successful training courses. These capabilities, developed over 40+ years of offering training, include a wide selection of nuclear materials typically found in the nuclear fuel cycle, multiple sets of neutron and gamma-ray based NDA equipment, field-experienced instructors, and developed modular training materials, which can be easily customized to meet the customers’ needs.

Other locations at LANL, which are representative of actual nuclear fuel cycle facilities, are available for the development and training of nuclear security and safeguards approaches in a realistic environment. These locations in combination with the TA-66 facility yield a safe, secure, flexible, and realistic teaching environment to meet the needs of our domestic and international partners.

This facility offers testing and evaluation of new safeguards technologies with significant quantities of NM. Certified reference materials are available for measurement campaigns, detector comparisons, and system characterization.
