Advanced Gamma Nondestructive Assay Training Course

Learn about gamma ray based nondestructive assay concepts applied to nuclear nonproliferation needs.

This training course presents a wide range of gamma-ray measurement techniques used domestically, within the DOE complex, and globally by the IAEA and, other International nuclear regulatory agencies. The uses for the gamma-ray measurement techniques covered in this course include:

  • Criticality safety
  • Material identification
  • Nuclear security

The course is composed of lectures that describe underlying theories followed by hands-on laboratory exercises covering measurement techniques.

Target Audience

Individuals that perform, manage, or supervise measurements involving gamma-ray detection and analysis. Auditors, regulators, and policy makers may also benefit from attending this course.

Objectives

To provide students with an in-depth understanding of the use of gamma-ray spectrometry and spectroscopy to nondestructively measure and analyze special nuclear materials and other radionuclides of interest.

Previous Course Title: Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy for Nuclear Materials Accounting (MCA-343)

Duration

4.5 days

Typical Course Format

Monday-Thursday, 8:30AM to 5:00PM and Friday, 8:30AM to 12:00PM.

A schedule will be provided on the first day of the course. Coffee, tea, and water will be available during the morning and afternoon breaks.  An option for attending a no-host lunch at the training site will be provided for all students. The anticipated cost for these lunches will be approximately $5-10/person. The money will be collected on the day the lunch is served.

We will be entering into the laboratory to perform some measurements. For safety purposes, please be sure to wear closed toe shoes.
