The Associate Laboratory Directorate of Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality (ALDESHQ) provides mission enabling services by protecting people, resources, and the environment. ALDESHQ consists of 5 divisions, the Program Office and the Integration Office.
Institutional Quality and Performance Assurance’s mission is to provide integrated expert services for operational excellence, driving continuous improvement in support of the Laboratory mission. The assurance programs promote risk-based decision making, performance improvement, and organizational learning in achieving strategic goals.
Occupational Health is an innovative leader within the DOE complex in promoting and maintaining a healthy, safe, and productive workforce that focuses on the right work and the right processes to create the right Laboratory.
Occupational Safety and Health facilitates mission success by ensuring employee health and regulatory compliance by providing support and monitoring performance. Safety and industrial hygiene experts, support personnel, and medical professionals ensure the safety of employees in potentially hazardous conditions.
Radiation Protection provides expertise, capabilities, services, support, and oversight to help enable the Laboratory’s programmatic missions. We help ensure the Lab’s radiological work is safe for the worker, and to help maintain the Laboratory’s Radiation Protection Program’s compliance with regulations.
The Environmental Protection and Compliance Division assists Laboratory operating entities in applying for, negotiating, and complying with State and Federal requirements. We provide solutions that allow needed operational flexibility while minimizing environmental impacts, costs, and complexity for maintaining compliance.
The Waste Management Division provides a centralized, compliant, efficient, and operationally excellent waste and material management program. This includes turn-key, front-end, cradle-to-grave waste management support for all laboratory operations to allow researchers, engineers and others to focus on their primary missions.
The RSO division provides senior technical expertise to DOE generator sites across the complex in transuranic waste characterization, transportation certification for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and the study of radionuclide interactions in the repository environment.
The ESHQ Program Office collaborates across organizations and programs to enhance culture, promote wellbeing, and improve safety performance. Programs include Integrated Safety Management (ISM), SCoR in Action, Traffic & Pedestrian Safety (TPS), Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), and Employee Wellbeing. The ESHQ Integration Office facilitates the delivery of integrated, effective technical support, services, and communication for the ESHQ portfolio that includes safety, industrial hygiene, radiation protection, environmental compliance, waste management, quality, safeguards and security to achieve simultaneous excellence.
