The Institute for Materials Science (IMS) is the interdisciplinary research and educational center in NSEC focused on fostering the advancement of materials science at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Defining research directions and serving as a focal point for materials research collaboration inside and outside the laboratory are fundamental elements of our mission.

IMS supports workshops, conferences, programs within all areas of materials science, both theory and experiment. Interdisciplinary efforts are encouraged. Workshops, conferences, and programs are chosen through internal proposals

  • Distinguished Faculty Scholar Program

    This program supports the visit of a faculty member to spend 8 to 12 weeks at Los Alamos National Laboratory together with some of their students.

  • Workshops and Conferences

    The Institute for Materials Science hosts workshops and conferences to support the implementation of the Laboratory's materials strategy and promotes a strong sense of community among the Laboratory's materials researchers.

  • Texas A&M Mentor Student Program

    The Institute for Materials Science aims to identify mentors and help coordinate online summer internships for Texas A&M University (TAMU) undergraduate students in the area of materials science
