Expertise

Chuck Abolt is a hydrologist and soil scientist specializing in near-surface processes and cold environments. Chuck has experience using Amanzi-ATS, a multiphysics ecohydrology code developed at LANL, to evaluate how thaw-induced surface deformation (i.e., thermokarst) in tundra landscapes exerts feedbacks on permafrost stability. He also is experienced working with remotely sensed data and has authored a deep-learning based workflow for mapping periglacial geomorphic features within high resolution digital elevation models. Finally, Chuck is interested in the application of unmanned aerial vehicles to geosciences, and has written an algorithm for stabilizing and extracting temperature measurements from thermal imagery acquired using a cheap, uncooled camera system.
