Expertise

My research goal is to discover and develop novel microbiome-based therapeutics (MBT) to tackle the threat of emerging bacterial pathogens.  During my 15 years of in-depth training and research experience, I have gained extensive expertise in host-microbe interactions, probiotic development, microbiome analysis, and food safety. For instance, during my postdoc, I led several efforts to establish and develop a microbiome screening platform which was used to discover MBT against drug-resistant pathogens such as Clostridioides difficile and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). My Ph.D. research work specifically focused on using transcriptomics to understand host response to probiotics as well as investigating the impact of nutrition and rotavirus infection on the gut microbiota of infant children. Additional research towards my Master’s degree included investigating bacterial pathogenesis and developing prophylactic (nanoparticle vaccine) and therapeutic measures (small molecules discovery) to control the foodborne zoonotic pathogen, Campylobacter jejuni. My current research covers developing (i) an all-in-one platform for manufacturing live biotherapeutics, (ii) a living diagnostic-therapeutic system, and (iii) a bioengineering human gut platform.
