We provide computational and experimental assessments in support of the laboratory mission.

The Monte Carlo Methods, Codes, & Applications group (XCP-3) delivers technology, methods, production quality codes, and training to our sponsors, primarily U.S. federal agencies, through research, development, and maintenance of high-quality software and documentation.

Our key focus areas support a variety of laboratory missions:
  • Stockpile stewardship
  • Non-proliferation
  • Threat reduction
  • Energy and environmental sciences

Through participation in emergency response exercises, our efforts contribute to the nation's security by maintaining the ability to respond successfully to an incident of nuclear terrorism. Our predictive capability is the nation's foremost predictive tool for nuclear criticality safety simulations.

Our group also develops and maintains MCNP®, a general purpose Monte Carlo N-Particle code that can be used for neutron, photon, electron, or coupled neutron/photon/electron transport. Specific areas of application include, but are not limited to, radiation protection and dosimetry, radiation shielding, radiography, medical physics, nuclear criticality safety, detector design and analysis, nuclear oil well logging, accelerator target design, fission and fusion reactor design, decontamination and decommissioning.
