The new facility will accommodate up to three helicopters and other types of equipment used for firefighting.

A multi-federal-agency effort is now underway to build a new Interagency Fire Center in the heart of Northern New Mexico.

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Bandelier National Monument, and Santa Fe National Forest Service broke ground in June to build a new 6,400 square foot facility for joint coordination and response related to wildland fires. So far, site preparation has started, and the old facility has been torn down. Completion of the $3 million facility is scheduled for May 2013. The larger facility is expected to significantly enhance the current fire-fighting capabilities of the partnering agencies.

The new facility, located on NNSA property at LANL's Technical Area 49 near Bandelier National Monument, will accommodate up to three helicopters and other types of equipment used for firefighting. The multipurpose facility will also include room for offices, training, and meetings, and storage for fire protection and suppression equipment.

The new facility is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environment Design criteria for reduced energy and water use.
