Bradbury Science Museum hosts Robotics Night

Regional school robotics teams and other robotics enthusiasts gathered at a Robotics Night at the Bradbury Science Museum on August 25. Visitors got the chance to manipulate robots themselves and watch a video about the Mars Rover presented by Roger Wiens, a principal investigator with the Los Alamos National Laboratory team that works on the Mars Rover, who also answered questions from the attendees.

The Laboratory, Los Alamos County Police Department, and University of New Mexico Los Alamos also displayed robots used in their organizations. Susannah Rousculp, who coaches a Girl Scout robotics team in Los Alamos, was on hand to talk about how to start a robotics team. The evening was hosted by the Bradbury Science Museum Association and supported by New Mexico Bank and Trust.

Laboratory sets new fundraising record for student scholarships

Los Alamos National Laboratory employees set a new record for employee giving during the 2017 Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund drive, raising more than $400,000 for students in Northern New Mexico. The Laboratory’s operating company Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS) also contributed $250,000 to the fund.

“These donations will help provide financial support to students across Northern New Mexico as they strive to obtain a higher education that, in many cases, will change lives and contribute to the betterment of the region, the state and ultimately the nation,” says Jeff Yarbrough from the Laboratory, who was champion of this year’s scholarship campaign.

In 2017, 144 Northern New Mexico students received $693,250 from the scholarship fund.

The conference takes place at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort.

2017 NM PLTW State Conference takes place September 15

Calling K-12 teachers, administrators and counselors: the 2017 New Mexico Project Lead The Way (PLTW) State Conference takes place at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort in Santa Ana Pueblo on September 15.

Nationally, PLTW provides innovative STEM education curricular programs used in middle and high schools, and the conference is organized by the PLTW’s New Mexico affiliate, the Engineering New Mexico Resource Network in the College of Engineering at New Mexico State University. The conference will cover topics such as the state Public Education Department’s new career-technical education programs and how to engage students through co-curricular activities.

Etsy is helping creators of handmade products sell online.

WESST hosts Etsy Training workshop for artists

The small business development and training organization WESST hosted a free introduction to opening an online Etsy store on August 5 at the P’oe Tsawa Library in Ohkay Owingeh.

Etsy is an online store used by creators of handmade products to reach a worldwide audience, and it has a growing following of artists and craftspeople in Northern New Mexico. The course covered the basics of opening a store, developing a sales plan and photographing products.
