Blood Road

The "Blood Road" film fundraiser on September 7 benefits Healing America’s Heroes, a therapeutic horse and fly fishing program for veterans in Chama. Tickets are available at the Reel Deal Theater for $10. The movie documents the journey of ultra-endurance athlete Rebecca Rusch and her Vietnamese cycling partner along 1,200 miles of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in search of the crash location of Rusch’s father’s fighter plane.

September 4: Hearts for Honduras Walk/Run

Run or walk 5 or 10 kilometers to raise money for Santa Maria de la Paz Honduran Mission Group, which supports the less fortunate in Guaimaca, Honduras. The event kicks off at 8 a.m., with a kids fun run at 9:30 a.m. The first 150 registered runners receive technical T-shirts.

Every Tuesday at noon, bring your lunch to ProjectY, watch a TED talk, and discuss. See each week’s topic here.

September 7: Blood Road

Ride the Ho Chi Minh Trail with ultra-endurance athlete Rebecca Rusch, as the award-winning documentary Blood Road premieres at the Reel Deal Theater (2551 Central Ave., Los Alamos). The screening will raise funds for Healing America’s Heroes, a therapeutic horse, fly fishing, and skill-building program in Chama that serves male and female veterans with week-long retreats.

September 10: Wolf Pack Trail Run

This 10K, 5K, or 3K run/walk benefits the Santa Fe Waldorf School Athletics Department. The event starts at 8 a.m. at 26 Puesta del Sol.

September 13: Monthly Entrepreneur Meetup

ProjectY welcomes Momo Vuyisich, Chief Science Officer at local startup Viome. Vuyisich will give a brief overview of his journey from academia and government into a startup, then open it up for Q&A. The event takes place from 5:30–7 p.m

September: Scientist in the Spotlight

 The event takes place at the Bradbury Science Museum from 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

September 21: Office hours with NM Economic Development Department

The Northern New Mexico community can meet one-on-one with Ryan Eustice, Community Business & Rural Development Team Region 2 Representative for the State of New Mexico Economic Development Department during these open office hours (9:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.) at Project Y.

September 21: Science on Tap

Sip local wine or beer, have a bite to eat, and listen to Laboratory scientist Sharon Bone, who will talk about how molecular-scale tools can help us better understand how human activity has influenced the fate of toxic elements on a regional scale. The talk starts at 5:30 p.m. at UnQuarked in Central Park Square in Los Alamos. 

September 23: Los Alamos Health Fair

From 8 a.m.­–noon, visit more than 60 booths to learn about and be screened for various health conditions. The event at Griffith Gymnasium is sponsored by the Los Alamos Heart Council.

September 29: Los Alamos High School Homecoming Parade

This annual event takes place at 2:30 p.m. The parade route will travel west on Central Avenue merging onto Canyon Road. 

September 30: Jog, Walk, and Wag

Bring a furry friend along to this 3K walk or 5/10K run, which  starts at 8:30 a.m. across from the clock tower by the Cumbres and Toltec train station in Chama. The event benefits the Chama Valley Humane Society and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chama.

September 30: National Public Lands Day

Get into Bandelier National Monument and the Valles Caldera National Preserve at no cost on this fee-free day!

September 30: Opera on the Rocks

Opera Alta presents Mozart at Bandelier with selections from Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio. Held at the Bandelier amphitheater, the event kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Food, wine, and beer vendors will be on site, and youth activities will be provided.

Lab volunteers

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) events is made possible with support from the Department of Energy through the Laboratory’s Science Education Community Service Time Program. To request STEM experts, complete a brief online request form.

Los Alamos experts and volunteers can also be requested through the Laboratory’s Volunteer Program, which partners with the national Volunteer Match initiative.

The Laboratory has speakers with experience in a wide variety of subjects who can tailor their content for a range of audiences. Call 505-667-7000 to be matched with the right person for your audience.
