May 1­–31: Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

A declaration by Los Alamos County Council urges drivers to stay alert for motorcyclists.

May 5­–6: RoboRave U.S.

Now in its 16th year, New Mexico’s largest robotics competition is expected to see more than 1,800 participants from more than 16 countries at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

May 6: Pueblo of San Ildefonso Health and Education Fair

Highlighting health, safety, wellness, the Pueblo of San Ildefonso and surrounding communities present a fair to encourage and inspire tribal youth and others to pursue career and education opportunities in the area.

May 13: Scientist in the Spotlight

How do you see something that’s smaller than a particle of light? Noah Orfield, with the Lab’s Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies, will explain how such tiny structures can be observed in the lab and what we’re learning about their properties. During that same time, Isaac Salazar, a mechanical engineer, will talk about how experimental variables can be used to improve science. If that’s not enough, you can also make and fly a paper helicopter. Another fun Saturday at the Bradbury Science Museum happens from 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

May 18: Science on Tap—Discovering boron on Mars

Come and hear Patrick Gasda, of the Lab’s Space and Remote Sensing group, talk about what has been learned from the ChemCam instrument, the NASA Curiosity rover, and where this investigation might lead. The event is held at UnQuarked in Central Park Square in Los Alamos at 5:30 p.m.

May 19: Bike to Work Day

May is National Bike Month during which the League of American Bicyclists encourages communities to participate in Bike to Work Day on May 19. Los Alamos County and the Laboratory are both sponsoring Bike to Work Day events so please be aware of bicyclists sharing the road. The County will have free coffee at the Municipal Building from 7 to 9 a.m., and will sponsor a rally with free food at Ashley Pond from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The sky will fill with flying kites at the Whiterock Kite Festival on May 20–21.

May 19: Los Alamos Summer Concert: Chuchito Valdes

Afro-Cuban jazz at 7 p.m. at Overlook Park in White Rock. The Kite Festival kicks off with a night kite-flight demonstration during the concert.

May 20–21: Kite Festival

Kite-building workshops, music, food, and lots of kite flying on Saturday and Sunday from 12–5 p.m. at Overlook Park in White Rock.

May 20: Jemez Mountain Trail Runs

This epic twelfth annual race benefits several local organizations and features 15-mile, 50-km, and 50-mile courses across the local terrain. Start times vary; see http://www.highaltitudeathletics.org/JemezMt.htm for more information.

May 22: Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund drive

Help area students afford higher education by contributing to the Los Alamos Employee’s Scholarship Fund. Donations are accepted year-round, but the drive for 2018 scholarship funds starts May 22.

May 23–24: Successfully Market Your Business to the Government Class

This free, interactive workshop provides participants with resources to start basic government marketing, offered by Santa Fe Higher Education Center.

May 26: Los Alamos Summer Concert: Deke Dickerson

Alt-indie rock from Los Angeles at 7 p.m. at Ashley Pond.

May 30–June 2: SFSI Summer Science 2017

Santa Fe Science Initiative presents a week of exploration and inquiry for teacher of K–6th grades, with special guest Barry Kluger-Bell. Contact susan@sfscience.org or 505-231-0493 to register.

June 1–2: STEM Symposium

Build STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and literacy connections in New Mexico classrooms at the Embassy Suites Albuquerque Hotel at the fourth annual STEM Symposium.

Lab volunteers

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) events is made possible with support from the Department of Energy through the Laboratory’s Science Education Community Service Time Program. To request STEM experts, complete a brief online request form.

Los Alamos experts and volunteers can also be requested through the Laboratory’s Volunteer Program, which partners with the national Volunteer Match initiative.

The Laboratory has speakers with experience in a wide variety of subjects who can tailor their content for a range of audiences. Call 505-667-7000 to be matched with the right person for your audience.
