September 2–October 28: Financing the entrepreneurial enterprise

This class takes place on Fridays from 12–4 p.m. at ProjectY in Los Alamos and focuses on the money aspect of starting a business, culminating in a real crowdfunding campaign.

September 8: Startup Secrets

Steven Brumby, co-founder of Descartes Labs, worked at Los Alamos National Lab for 17 years prior to entering the startup realm. He dishes advice to technical entrepreneurs at Project Y at 5:30 p.m. 

September 9: Regional Coalition of LANL Communities board meeting

Guest speakers include Doug Hintze (environmental management at Los Alamos), Kathy Keith (Los Alamos Community Partnerships), and Val Alonzo (Regional Development Corporation). The event runs from 9–11 a.m. at Ohkay Owingeh Conference Center.

September 14: Community campaign kickoff

United Way of Northern New Mexico kicks off the season of philanthropy at Ashley Pond from 5:30–7 p.m. Blue Window Bistro will provide food, and campaign chair Kurt Steinhaus will unveil this year’s campaign goals.

September 15: Federal government accounting workshop

Is your accounting system compliant with federal regulations? Are you audit ready? Come learn the keys to successful government accounting at the Española SBDC from 9 a.m.–noon.

September 16: Etsy and marketing workshop

The first of four sessions about turning a craft into an online business, marketing, pricing, and optimizing social media. Register by September 9; classes from from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on September 16 and 30, October 14, and November 4 at WESST Santa Fe.

September 19: Gravitational waves community lecture

Gather at Eldorado Hotel from 7:30–9:30 p.m. to hear Gabriela Gonzalez, from Louisiana State University, discuss ripples in the fabric of spacetime called gravitational waves.

September 20: Hiring in Tech

This free high-tech roundtable takes place at Del Charro Saloon in Santa Fe from 5:30–7:30 p.m. and features a panel of leaders from the technology community. 

September 21: Native American Venture Acceleration Fund Information Session

Learn more about an opportunity for businesses owned by tribal members to obtain financial assistance. The event is from 1–4 p.m. at the Northern New Mexico Citizens Advisory Board office (94 Cities of Gold Road, Santa Fe). 

September 24: Electric Car Challenge workshops

Local area sixth through eighth-grade students are encouraged to participate in the New Mexico Electric Car Challenge this fall. Workshops are scheduled in Española, Albuquerque, and Carlsbad. 

September 24: Los Alamos Health Fair

Head to the Los Alamos High School gym from 8 a.m.–noon for flu shots, educational exhibits, health screenings, and blood profiles—all for free.

September 25–30: Advances in Nuclear Nonproliferation Technology & Policy Conference

Panels, workshops, and sessions for nuclear science researchers, facilities operators, and policy makers with an agenda that includes current trends in nuclear material and fuel cycle technology developments as they relate to safeguards, treaty verification, and nonproliferation policy. The conference takes place at La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe.

September 27–28: Systems approaches in immunology

This 5 p.m. meeting at the Inn and Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe will include scientists studying immunological processes at the cellular, population, and organismal levels, with an idea to discuss the ways data and analyses can be combined across these various levels to form a basis of systems immunology. 

September 28: REDI conference and workforce summit

The Regional Development Corporation (RDC) partners with Northern Area Workforce Board and NM Workforce Connection for this year's conference, which includes a workforce summit to identify possible paths forward in our challenging environment.

October 13: NNM 20/20 Campaign Awards

The event features a dinner buffet and cash bar and is a good opportunity to network and meet the job creators of our region. 

October 14: Proposals due for Native American Venture Acceleration Fund

October 29: MANA del Norte Scholarship Banquet

The 27th annual event kicks off with a silent auction at 5:30 p.m. at the Lodge at Santa Fe.

November 5: Northern New Mexico College Foundation Gala

The 21st annual event takes place at the Ohkay Convention Center from 6–9 p.m.

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) events is made possible with support from the Department of Energy through the Laboratory’s Science Education Community Service Time Program. To request STEM experts, complete a brief online request form.

Los Alamos experts and volunteers can also be requested through the Laboratory’s Volunteer Program, which partners with the national Volunteer Match initiative.
