August 1: Rudolfo Anaya Summer Reading Program ends
Elementary students in grades K–6 from Los Alamos, Pojoaque, Rio Arriba, and Santa Fe counties (including tribal schools) should turn in their reading logs. Read more about the rules—and the prizes!—here.
August 3: Student Symposium
Los Alamos summer students present their research and share their work experiences with the public from 1–4 p.m. on the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos campus.
August 5: Deadline for Northern New Mexico Tribal Business Scholarship
The Northern New Mexico Tribal communities encourage Native students to pursue business-related degrees and use their education skills to be a part of their tribes’ long-range goals for enhancing economic development and business opportunities. Learn more here.

Donate a backpack filled with school supplies for elementary and middle school students. Information and drop-off locations can be found here.
August 13: Scientist in the Spotlight
Nick Generous discusses how social media tools help researchers improve disease forecasting. Next, Teri Roberts explores computer concepts, such as binary digits and supercomputers. These talks take place at the Bradbury Science Museum from 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
August 18: Science on Tap—the neutrino
Sip local wine or beer, have a bite eat, and listen as Keith Rielage, of the Lab’s Neutron Science and Technology group, shares how the neutrino was discovered and studied. The talk takes place at UnQuarked in Central Park Square in Los Alamos.
August 18: Understanding Solicitations Workshop
Open to all businesses interested in government contracting, this workshop takes a comprehensive look at the components of solicitation. Learn how to decipher proposal instructions and evaluation criteria. The event takes place at Northern New Mexico College in Española from 9 a.m.–noon. Register here.

August 26–28: Startup Weekend
Startup Weekends are 54-hour entrepreneurial events where ideas are pitched, teams are formed, markets are validated and startups are started.
August 31: TEN's Tough Love
Taos Entrepreneurial Network (TEN) has launched a new series of events that will help entrepreneurs vet their business ideas in front of a panel of experts. Tough Love, from 3:30–6:30 p.m., is geared toward helping businesses identify the flaws in their product or service to help them achieve success more quickly.
September 28: REDI Conference and Workforce Summit
RDC partners with Northern Area Workforce Board and NM Workforce Connection for this year's conference, which includes a workforce summit to identify possible paths forward in our challenging environment.
October 13: NNM 20/20 Campaign Awards
The event features a dinner buffet and cash bar and is a good opportunity to network and meet the job creators of our region.
Lab Volunteers
Los Alamos National Laboratory’s participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) events is made possible with support from the Department of Energy through the Laboratory’s Science Education Community Service Time Program. To request STEM experts, complete a brief online request form.
Los Alamos experts and volunteers can also e requested through the Laboratory’s Volunteer Program, which partners with the national Volunteer Match initiative.
