Students from Pablo Roybal Elementary in Pojoaque took part in Read Across America in 2015. This year, schools from throughout northern New Mexico will participate on March 2, the 112th birthday of Dr. Seuss.
Read Across America - March 2
Get your Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham ready to go! Dr. Seuss Day, also known as Read Across America Day, will be held on Wednesday, March 2. Read Across America is an initiative created by the National Education Association to promote reading. Schools already planning to participate include Pablo Roybal Elementary in Pojoaque and Ponderosa Montessori in White Rock. In conjunction with Earth Day activities, the reading theme, “Save the Trees,” offers easy suggestions for “Going Green” by reading about realistic ways children can reduce waste, protect the environment, and read. Check with your local school district to see if reading events are planned and how you might volunteer.
RoboRAVE—March 5
Teams of students from northern New Mexico area schools will test their critical thinking and teamwork skills building autonomous robots at the RoboRAVE Rally on Saturday, March 5, at Northern New Mexico College in Española. This year’s rally will include the Northern New Mexico Science Showdown simultaneously during the rally.
Held throughout the day, science, technology, engineering, and math activities will include demonstrations from the Explora Museum and HazMat robot operating demonstrations by the Laboratory’s Hazardous Material team.
Coronado Ventures Forum – March 10
Business can tap into a new $20M startup capital pipeline by attending the Coronado Ventures Forum focused on the newly formed, New Mexico Catalyst Fund. This fund focuses on New Mexico startups and will address the funding needs of fledging companies to support startup companies and leverage other investment funding. The event will include a panel discussion which will focus on the nuts and bolts of the fund, and also include perspectives on the potential impact of the fund on the State. Science on Tap – March 17
With new outbreaks of illness around the globe from zika virus to the common cold, forecasting the potential spread of infection has become even more important. Nick Generous of the Laboratory’s Information Systems and Modeling Group will provide a brief introduction to the subject of disease forecasting. Also learn how social media tools are helping make prediction even more accurate. Science on Tap will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the UnQuarked Wine Room, 145 Central Park Square in Los Alamos.
It’s a Small World—March 19
Explore the teeny-tiny world at NanoDays, a free, family-oriented event designed to engage people of all ages in learning about the emerging field of nanoscale science and engineering. The event will be held at the Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe on March 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Take part in hands-on experiments for kids, science-oriented video games, and microscopic imagery. Regional Coalition of LANL Communities Meetings—April and May Dates
The Regional Coalition of LANL Communities will meet in open session in April and May. Founded in 2011, the Regional Coalition works in partnership to create one voice to ensure that national decisions incorporate local needs and concerns. Upcoming meeting dates are as follows:
- Friday, April 8, 9–11 a.m. at the Española City Council Chambers
- Friday, May 13, 9–11 a.m. at the Town of Taos Council Chambers
STEM Career Day – STEM Volunteer Opportunity—April 13
Northern New Mexico College is seeking volunteers to host hands-on activity booths at their STEM Career Day on Wednesday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (STEM is science, technology, engineering, and math.) The purpose of this event is to network and expose youth to a variety of STEM fields. Students in grades 9 to 12 from throughout northern New Mexico will be participating.

Lab Volunteers
Los Alamos National Laboratory’s participation in STEM events is made possible with support from the Department of Energy through the Laboratory’s Science Education Community Service Time Program.
To request STEM experts, members of the community can complete a brief online request form. The form also can be accessed from the STEM Education Programs website.
An additional option for requesting Los Alamos experts and other volunteers is through the Laboratory’s Volunteer Program, which partners with the national VolunteerMatch initiative.
