March was an eventful month for the Bradbury Science Museum

Five different activities kept people engaged and excited.

The next "Night with a nerd" event is scheduled for June. It will feature the Lab's work on the Mars rover.

In addition to our usual monthly events, Science On Tap and Scientist in the Spotlight, we were also involved in three special events in March.

75th anniversary kickoff
Laboratory Director Terry Wallace was on hand to greet visitors at the Museum to help kickoff the Lab’s 75th anniversary event on March 13. More than 200 people attended the special gathering.

The Bradbury Science Museum Association (BSMA) sold the first official merchandise incorporating the 75th anniversary and other historic Lab logos. Sales were brisk and the nonprofit raised more than $7,000. The funds will help the BSMA support science education outreach within the region.

Many of the items sold out that day, but they are continually being restocked to accommodate demand. If you’d like to stop by the Museum to purchase branded merchandise, be sure to check the Gadgets schedule for hours.

Two BSMA member events
During March, the BSMA held its first two member-orientated events. On March 3, it held a Design your own science-based comics lecture and workshop that was led by Jeff Benham of the Santa Fe-based organization 7000 B.C.

Second was a “Night with a Nerd” talk by Alan Carr, the Lab’s historian. He presented a short overview of the Laboratory’s backstory and current work called “75 Years in 60 Minutes.” The event was free to all BSMA members and $10 for non-members. The next “Night with a Nerd” event (scheduled for June 21) will feature Roger Wiens, the Lab’s principal investigator for the ChemCam instrument, which is currently touring Mars as part of the Curiosity rover. Stay tuned to this publication or our calendar for more details.

Feel free to join the BSMA and enjoy membership benefits all year-round as well as around the world.
