2020 Manhattan Project National Historical Park Tours at Los Alamos

April tours have been postponed.


The tours are open to U.S. citizens. Proof is required.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), in collaboration with the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Los Alamos Field Office and the National Park Service, will offer public tours of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, Los Alamos site on the following 2020 dates:

  • Thursday, April 2 ­— POSTPONED, more information to come

  • Thursday, July 9 — Registration opens May 11 at 10 a.m.
  • Friday, July 10 — Registration opens May 11 at 10 a.m.
  • Thursday October 1 — Registration opens August 10 at 10 a.m.
  • Friday, October 2 — Registration opens August 10 at 10 a.m.

Participants will see the Pond Cabin, which served as an office for Emilio Segrè’s Radioactivity Group studying plutonium, a battleship bunker used to protect equipment and staff during implosion design explosives testing, and the Slotin Building, site of Louis Slotin’s criticality accident.

Please note:

  • Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • There are specific identification and clothing requirements that participants must follow if they want to participate.

It is important to read and understand all tour requirements to ensure entry.

Required Visitor Information
  • You must be a U.S. citizen and provide proof of citizenship.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must provide current photo identification for tour registration check-in (state issued I.D., state issued driver’s license, or U.S. passport).
  • The tour will involve traversing uneven surfaces, sun exposure, standing for prolonged periods, and lack of access to modern facilities during the tour.
  • You will be under escort during the tour and must stay in groups and designated areas at all times.
  • The tour may be canceled with little advance notice due to factors beyond our control.

Safety and security are vitally important at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Your eligibility to visit a national security site will be verified after you register. As part of the tour, you will receive a visitor badge. During the tour, your visitor badge must be visible at all times. If you misplace the badge, you must notify your escort immediately.

Prohibited Items

You may not bring cell phones, cameras, recording devices, Fitbits, smart watches or Bluetooth accessories, except those associated with medically necessary items. Additionally, following prohibited articles must not be brought on Laboratory property:

  • Nongovernment-owned firearms.
  • Dangerous weapons and explosives (including dangerous instruments or materials likely to cause substantial injury or damage to persons or property). This restriction includes pocket, hunting, or other sharp knives with blades longer than 2.5 inches.
  • Alcoholic beverages.
  • Controlled substances (for example, illegal drugs and associated paraphernalia, but not prescription medication).
  • Items prohibited by local, state or federal law.
Personal items and tour bus are subject to inspection at any time to ensure compliance with requirements as listed above. Unauthorized items discovered during the tour will be confiscated, so please observe LANL policies.

You are encouraged to bring water and sunscreen, although water will only be permitted on the bus. There is no eating or drinking while on the walking portion of the tour. Smoking and vaping are prohibited.

Photography is not allowed at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Common Tour Questions

Are there hazards involved?
Yes. The area of the tour, Technical Area 18, is a former industrial site. We have taken safety precautions, however, you are responsible for your well-being. Please be careful when walking, listen to your escorts, follow all instructions, and always pay attention to what is going on around you. You will receive an extensive safety briefing at the Bradbury Science Museum prior to the tour. 

What will the weather be like?
Expect temperatures in the 80s and above, with low humidity. As a precaution, you should be aware that Los Alamos, New Mexico is above 7,300-feet of elevation. Altitude sickness is not uncommon for those not acclimated to high altitudes. In the event of inclement weather, the tour may be canceled. Tour participants are required to wear closed-toe, closed-heel, sturdy footwear, and long pants. Long sleeves are advised, but not required. We ask that everyone bring a hat to protect against the sun.

If you arrive in shorts and sandals (or any other footwear that is not sturdy, closed-toe, and closed-heel), we will unfortunately not be able to allow you to go on the tour.

Will there be restrooms?
There will be temporary bathroom facilities at the tour site. However, we encourage you to take advantage of a rest break at the Bradbury Science Museum prior to departing on the tour.

How many people can I register?
You may register yourself and one other person.

If my schedule changes, can I cancel?
Yes. To cancel your registration, please send an email with your name tour time to mpnhpregistration@lanl.gov

How do I know I have successfully registered for a tour?
You will receive a confirmation email.

What if I am wait-listed?
We anticipate high volume for these tours. If the tour date and time you have selected is full, you will have the option to add your name and email to a limited capacity wait-list for one (1) ticket. You are also welcome to try to secure a seat on another tour. For those successfully added to a waitlist, if one (1) ticket becomes available, you will be contacted automatically with further instructions on how to reserve your ticket. Check your email frequently as you will have a limited amount of time to respond.
Identification Documentation Requirements

The following documentation will be accepted to establish U.S. citizenship for all tour participants for badging purposes:

A U.S. passport: must be current, signed, and have an easily recognizable photograph (if the photograph does not match due to facial changes, weight gain/loss or hair color, you may be asked to present another form of I.D.) The U.S. passport is the primary and preferred means of establishing U.S. citizenship for both U.S.-born and foreign-born U.S. citizens. Passport cards and official U.S. passports are also accepted. This document may serve to establish both identity and citizenship.
Note: The Badge Office will accept an expired U.S. passport to establish U.S. citizenship if presented in conjunction with a valid form of photo I.D.

  • A birth certificate: must be an original or state-certified copy bearing a raised, impressed, or multicolored seal of the registrar’s office. Birth certificates should also indicate the record was registered shortly after birth with a state-run office of vital records.
  • Delayed birth certificates: delayed birth certificates are defined as certificates that are registered more than one year after birth. These documents will be accepted in conjunction with the following secondary evidence: baptismal certificates, hospital birth records or affidavits of persons having personal knowledge about the facts of the birth. Other secondary evidence can include early census, school, or family records, newspaper files, or insurance papers. All documents submitted as evidence must be original and certified. Presented documentation will require badge office management approval.
  • An Enhanced Driver’s License: a current, valid Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) issued by Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, or Washington. Just as the U.S. passport, this document will serve to establish both identity and citizenship. (This is not the same as REAL I.D.)
  • A Tribal Identification Card: documentation must indicate membership to a federally recognized Native American tribe. Due to the varying nature of tribal I.D. cards, this documentation will require authorization by badge office management.
  • A U.S. Naturalization Certificate: document must be issued by the I.N.S. and must be an original bearing the individual’s photograph and signature. Photocopies will not be accepted.
  • A Military Processing Record—provided that it is an original and reflects U.S. citizenship (DD Form 1966).
  • For citizens born abroad to U.S. parents, a Certificate of Birth (Form FS 545 or DS 1350); or a Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America (Form FS 240).

The following documentation will NOT be accepted by the Badge Office as proof of citizenship:

  • Social Security Cards
  • Hospital Birth Record or baptismal certificates (unless used to support a delayed birth certificate)
  • Birth Registration document
  • Global Entry Traveler card
  • A PIV identification card issued by a non-Federal government facility
