Applications open for free Summer Physics Camp for Young Women

New Mexico middle- and high-school students are encouraged to apply for the free, two-week, virtual Summer Physics Camp for Young Women, taught primarily by the women scientists and engineers of Los Alamos National Laboratory, June 6–17, 2022.

Campers will receive materials for conducting hands-on experiments and group projects at home during camp, while attending virtual presentations and demonstrations. Presenters include approximately 90 scientists, engineers, and other professionals from the Laboratory, 75 percent of whom are female. Approximately 35 campers will be selected for the 2022 camp.

Camp sessions also cover professional-development skills such as resumes, interviews, college opportunities in New Mexico, professional societies, internships and careers at the Laboratory. Campers, who must be young women living in northern New Mexico, central New Mexico or tribal communities who have completed Algebra 1 or higher-level math class  receive a stipend upon completion. Of 2021’s pool of 35 campers, 16 have gone on to secure internships at the Laboratory for summer 2022.

The application deadline is April 3, and students can learn more and apply here.

Lab employees volunteer at Los Alamos County Science Fair

Throughout January 2022,  Lab employees stepped up to make sure students got to enjoy the Los Alamos County Science Fair, which took place virtually this year.

LANL head judges Cathy Snelson, David Coblentz, and Mark Petersen recruited and organized 36 other judges from across the Lab and community to evaluate 65 projects from students in grades 4-12th.  More than 30 LAPS students qualified (at County and then Districts) to advance to this year’s Northeastern New Mexico Regional Science & Engineering Fair.

2022 marks the fifth year that Cathy Snelson and David Coblentz have served as head judges for the fair, in which time nearly 1,000 LAPS students have participated, with many progressing to compete and win top awards at the regional, state, and international levels.

Also covering Laboratory operator Triad’s support for the region, the publication includes information on the impact of the grants and sponsorships made under Triad’s Community Commitment Plan, and a list of the organizations that received financial support.
