Fun and science, coming to a school near you

Challenge Tomorrow is ready to hit the road for its 2024 season, repping the Lab and bringing cool STEM activities to students in New Mexico. “Challenge Tomorrow is a traveling program from Los Alamos National Laboratory,” explains program manager Kat Cook. “Students get to explore a variety of STEM subjects and careers alongside our Challenge Ambassadors who facilitate the activities. The ambassadors are employees from different disciplines across the Lab.”

You may have seen Challenge Tomorrow’s dynamic purple trailers at ScienceFest or at other events last year. If you peeked inside you saw interactive stations about space, bioscience, environmental protection and more — plus volunteer Labbie Challenge Ambassadors having a blast while sharing their excitement about STEM.

“One of the best things that happens when we visit local schools is seeing the students get excited,” says Cook. “Sometimes they are just happy to be out of class and doing something different, and sometimes, ideally, they get excited about something they learn on the trailers. It is wonderful to see kids making connections between science and their everyday lives.” This year’s first stops include Santa Fe, Las Vegas, and Tierra Amarilla. Requests for visits to other schools are in process.

Cook adds, “It is also wonderful to see students connecting with the ambassadors and envisioning themselves in a future career. It is these moments of connection that really make Challenge Tomorrow special.”
