Research Library Graduate Research Assistant

What You Will Do

The LANL Research Library seeks a forward-looking information professional to proactively deliver support for the Research Library’s electronic products that support access to scientific institutional content as a Graduate Research Assistant.

We offer a creative setting in which information technologies and services are applied to scientific productivity; we aggressively pursue new ideas, services, products, and approaches to satisfy research needs.

This position requires a versatile individual who embraces change, works collaboratively, and has a strong customer service focus.

What You Will Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with database driven web projects, using standard technologies such as XHTML, CSS, PHP, MySql.
  • Experience with troubleshooting online systems & assisting end users with access.
  • Experience working on team-based software development/implementation projects.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, for a wide range of audiences.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with library repository systems such as DSpace, Fedora.
  • Familiarity with open source software.
  • Familiarity with digital scholarship tools and trends.
  • Ability to formulate and implement innovative approaches and solutions to problems.
  • Experience with Unix and languages such as PHP, Python, Perl, Java.

Research Library Graduate Research Assistant - Discovery and access

What You Will Do

The LANL Research Library seeks a forward-looking information professional to proactively support and improve discovery and access to library resources. As a Graduate Research Assistant, the selected candidate will participate in electronic resource management and in metadata analysis, creation, maintenance and enrichment.

We offer a creative setting in which information technologies and services are applied to scientific productivity; we aggressively pursue new ideas, services, products, and approaches to satisfy research needs.

This position requires a versatile individual who embraces creative problem-solving, works collaboratively, and has a strong customer service focus.

What You Will Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of bibliographic and/or cataloging principles
  • Familiarity with concepts or technologies used to manage and access e-resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing; analytical and organizational skills. 

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of metadata standards such as MARC, RDA and Dublin Core
  • Experience with library systems such as Alma, Primo, OCLC.
  • Understanding of e-resource access issues.
  • Experience with metadata quality control and enhancement projects
  • Familiarity with applications such as Excel, OpenRefine, MarcEdit
  • Ability to formulate and implement innovative approaches and solutions to problems, and to adapt to evolving technology
