RDC Funds Highlands University Financial Literacy Seminars

The Regional Development Corporation has granted $10,000 to New Mexico Highlands University to present free financial literacy seminars that will help people cope with the impacts of COVID-19. Professors in the Highlands School of Business, Media and Technology will teach the financial literacy seminars along with business professionals in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The RDC grant will fund eight two-hour seminars open to attendees from Northern New Mexico. The seminars will be delivered via Zoom. In addition, the seminars will be archived so those who cannot attend the Zoom sessions can access them. For more information contact program coordinator Leon Bustos at leonbustos@nmhu.edu.

Middle school math camp works to change attitudes

The Laboratory’s Math and Science Academy (MSA) co-hosted a four-week online summer camp June 8 through July 3, designed to support mathematics understanding for 74 Pojoaque Valley School District (PVSD) students who will be entering grades six to eight in the fall. The free Mindset Math Summer Camp was designed to foster students’ appreciation for mathematics, to develop their problem-solving abilities, and to raise their awareness that they are capable of learning mathematics to high levels.

Students engaged in hands-on activities using materials provided to them in a math toolkit and facilitated by the camp teachers: five PVSD teachers and two Laboratory education specialists. As the camp went on, the district teachers took more responsibility for developing and leading sessions. Support for the camp came from Laboratory managing operator Triad, the LANL Foundation, the Santa Fe Community Foundation, and the Intel/RioRancho Community Foundation. Learn more here.

Lab receives DOE GreenBuy Prime Award

The Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded the Laboratory the “Green Buy Prime Award” in recognition of the Laboratory’s sustained performance in sustainable acquisition. The success of the Laboratory’s green purchasing program is a joint effort from Acquisition Services Management (ASM) Division’s Small Business Program and the Environmental Stewardship Group in the Environmental Protection and Compliance (EPC) Division.

“Receiving this award is confirmation that LANL is working hard to do the right thing in the procurement of more environmentally friendly products,” says Kassidy Boorman, Laboratory Pollution Prevention Program manager. “There is still plenty of work to be done in the area of sustainable acquisition. We look forward to our continued partnership with ASM to not only procure more environmentally friendly products, but also those products that are safe and effective in their use.” The Prime Award follows the Laboratory’s recent GreenBuy Gold Award for sustainable acquisition for fiscal year 2019.
