Apr 2: Nature on Tap – The Future of the East Jemez Mountains

Join local scientists to discuss the latest research on how fire and drought have changed our mountains and what the future holds for the local ecosystem. The event is held at UnQuarked in Central Park Square in Los Alamos at 5:30 p.m.

Apr 2, 4, 10: Kilopower – Powering NASA Mission on Mars

Join Los Alamos National Laboratory project lead Patrick McClure and chief reactor designer David Poston as they discuss the design and testing of Kilopower: a very small and simple nuclear reactor developed at the Laboratory in conjunction with NASA that may one day power a colony in space. The events will be held in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Los Alamos on April 2, 4 and 10.

Apr 3, 10, 17, 24: TED Talk Tuesday

Every Tuesday at noon, bring your lunch to ProjectY, watch a TED talk, and discuss. See each week’s topic here

Apr 4: New Mexico Gem and Mineral Show

Taking place at Buffalo Thunder, the New Mexico Rock Gem and Mineral Show is a free event for anyone interested in coming out to see over 100 dealers, collectors and artisans from around the nation.

Apr 5: 2018 Business Expo and Job Fair

The Santa Fe Community Convention Center is the location for the largest business Expo in Northern New Mexico, ideal if you’re looking for new customers, ready for a new job, seeking advice, or hoping to grow your network. The Expo’s aim is to connect businesspeople with the resources, people, and networks they need. 

Apr 9, 10, 11: Collective Goods book fair

Support the community while shopping for discounted books, music, and much more at the Collective Good book fair in the Laboratory’s Otowi Building. Fifteen percent of all proceeds will benefit the Food Depot. The fair is open for the following hours: Monday, April 9: 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Tuesday, April 10: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Wednesday, April 11: 9 a.m – 3 p.m.

Apr 14: Scientist in the Spotlight – Fungi/supercomputers

Stop by the Bradbury Science Museum from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. for presentations on fungi behavior and supercomputer programing. Renee Johansen will discuss the characteristics of fungi and how they play a role in our planet’s carbon cycle. Teri Roberts will explain how computers “know” what they’re doing, complete with hands-on exercises.

Apr 16: Science on Tap – The Science and Art of Wildfire Mitigation

Manny L’Esperance, with the Lab’s Emergency Preparedness group, discusses how the Lab is preparing for what could be an extreme fire season. This event is hosted by the Bradbury Science Museum at UnQuarked in Los Alamos at 5:30 p.m.

April 17: Nature Playtime

Bring your children ages 0 to 5 to the New Mexico Wildlife Center in Española from 10 - 11 a.m. to have fun learning about the wildlife around them. The event is free.

April 20: Crocheting and Knitting

Gather your your needles and yarn and bring them to the Taos Public Library from 2 - 4 p.m.! Come spend quality time crocheting and knitting in the company of others.

Apr 21: Earth Day Festival

Join the Pajarito Environmental Educational Center for a fun day of entertainment, food, activities, informational booths, and more. This year, they are focusing on the journey to zero waste, so many of the activities will help you repurpose, reduce, reuse, and recycle. Apr 22: Run for Her Life

Join the 8th annual Run for Her Life, a fundraiser sponsored by the Los Alamos Chapter of Hadassah for breast cancer research. There are 5km and 10km options to run or walk.

Apr 25: National DNA Day

Stop by the Bradbury Science Museum from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. to celebrate National DNA Day. Explore the structure of DNA through models and hands-on activities and learn about the Lab’s part in the Human Genome Project.

Apr 25: Bradbury Science Museum 25th Anniversary

Come celebrate the Bradbury Science Museum 25th Anniversary at 4 p.m. in Los Alamos. The event will celebrate the museum’s history as well as plans for the future.
