As 2014 drew to a close, the Laboratory’s Holiday Gift Drive collected 1,096 gifts for northern New Mexico children and seniors and an additional $1,500 worth of blankets, hats and gloves for St. Elizabeth Shelter in Santa Fe.

The donations came from Laboratory employees, the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Los Alamos Field Office and Cray Computer, Inc.

The collected presents reached their destinations with the help of regional partner agencies, including the Boys and Girls Club del Norte (Chimayó and Abiquiú); the City of Española (Operation Christmas Cheer); Española Valley High School (students with disabilities); the Los Alamos Family Council; the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department; the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department (Adult Protective Services); the Ohkay Owingeh Boys and Girls Club; the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (San Juan Bautista de Coyote/Gallina Council); Toy Run, Inc. (Española); and Wings for Hope (Santa Fe).

“In addition to the Holiday Gift Drive, Laboratory employees donated $2.17 million during the annual Employee Giving Campaign,” said Kurt Steinhaus, Community Programs Director. “This came to over $3 million for regional nonprofit organizations—even more than in previous years—when coupled with a $1 million match from Los Alamos National Security, LLC.”

Other Season of Giving successes during the fall of 2014 included 347 boxes of nonperishable food and 430 turkeys (roughly 25,900 meals) collected during the Laboratory’s Community Food Drive and Take a Turkey to Work Day. The food items were donated by Laboratory employees and the Los Alamos Food Co-op; Lowe's Super Save Market; Navarro, Inc.; Smith’s Marketplace; and Cray Computer, Inc. Taos Feeds Taos helped by providing a refrigerated truck for the Take a Turkey to Work Day.

In addition to the food donations, the Food Depot in Santa Fe received $2,492 from the Laboratory’s Autumn Book Fair. The money provided 9,986 meals for community members across northern New Mexico.

During the Laboratory’s Wreaths Across America campaign, Lab employees and SOC-Los Alamos, the Laboratory’s protective force subcontractor, helped purchase 2,016 wreaths for the Santa Fe National Cemetery, with an additional 400 wreaths purchased for Carlsbad Cemetery. On December 13—this year’s Wreaths Across America Day—seventy-five Laboratory volunteers helped place the wreaths.

“We could not have asked for a better Season of Giving,” noted Mike Martinez, project leader for the 2014 Holiday Gift Drive.
