Laboratory’s Holiday Gift Drive benefits northern New Mexico

Even after the Laboratory’s annual Employee Giving Campaign, Food Drive and Take a Turkey to Work Day have ended, Laboratory employees are continuing to support northern New Mexico’s communities. During the institution’s Holiday Gift Drive, employees use gift tags from regional nonprofit organizations to purchase presents for children and seniors who otherwise would not have presents for the holidays. The tags provide information on each participating community members’ specific gift wishes. After being collected at various Laboratory locations until December 16, the final gifts will be distributed throughout the counties of Los Alamos, Mora, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, San Miguel, Santa Fe and Taos.

New Mexico Electric Car Challenge was great success

Twenty-seven schools and 47 teams participated in the New Mexico Electric Car Challenge (formerly the New Mexico Hydrogen Fuels Challenge) on November 22 in Albuquerque, with 15 teams representing northern New Mexico. The students, grades 6 through 8, greatly enjoyed honing their skills in science and math by building and racing battery-powered cars. Events included a design challenge, oral presentations and the electric car competition.

Among the northern New Mexico schools, Team 2 from Santa Clara Day School won the Electric Car Challenge’s Spirit Award for their teamwork, enthusiasm, hard work and unity, and the Española School District’s Carlos Vigil Middle School received the competition's Sportsmanship Award. Hernandez Elementary School, also from the Española School District, earned the Ron Rioux Perseverance Award, and Hernandez’s Team 1 won second place in the oral presentations.

National Wreaths Across America Day is December 13

The national Wreaths Across America initiative coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies on a specified Saturday (December 13 this year) at Arlington National Cemetery and other cemeteries and locations in all 50 states and beyond. The ceremonies are made possible by thousands of volunteers who organize local events and raise funds to sponsor wreaths.

Laboratory employees are participating in this year’s Wreaths Across America Day by sponsoring holiday wreaths to be placed on grave sites at Santa Fe National Cemetery and Carlsbad Cemetery to help remember and honor the men and women who served the country. Employees also are volunteering to help place wreaths.
