One of the wonderful things about being part of Los Alamos National Laboratory is the opportunity to learn and grow in an institution that contributes so much to the region. Just last week we recognized volunteers for their work with nonprofit organizations and schools in northern New Mexico during 2013.  We had a record-breaking year, with 2,894 employee and retiree volunteers logging over 331,000 hours of service.  In honor of their gift of time and talent, Los Alamos National Security, LLC, the Laboratory’s management company, will donate almost $180,000 to nonprofit organizations on behalf of our volunteers.

I value our workplace culture of giving and appreciate our employees’ ongoing volunteerism throughout northern New Mexico and even nationwide. So, as the Laboratory, its employees and retirees wrap up celebrating last year’s volunteer successes, I’m pleased to say this is only a portion of our community giving. Programs such as the Science Education Community Service Time mean that whenever school (and even summer school) is in session, Laboratory employees stand by to offer their expertise.

In addition, we are about to launch a series of summer and fall community involvement activities, beginning with our school supply drive, which has set a goal of providing over 700 backpacks filled with important materials for successful learning.  Our LANL Laces program will distribute gift cards for over 200 new pairs of shoes to northern New Mexico students.

Looking further ahead, other upcoming community giving events include the Employee Giving Campaign with our United Way partners, Take a Turkey to Work Day and food and gift drives for the holidays. We will wrap up the year with the December Wreaths Across America campaign to honor our veterans.
