LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Aug. 11, 1999 -- The Los Alamos Neutron Science Center Division at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory has awarded $28,000 in scholarships to 29 undergraduate student employees in the second annual LANSCE Student Education Scholarships Program.

LANSCE Division Director Roger Pynn presented the awards during a ceremony Aug. 6 in Los Alamos' Louis Rosen Auditorium. The program is part of the division's effort to help students with their education costs and recruit them as permanent employees. Twenty-one of the recipients attend New Mexico universities and junior colleges. Two students received $500 scholarships; the remainder received $1,000 scholarships.

"It is really gratifying to see increases in both the number of recipients and the overall amounts awarded this year compared to last year," said Pynn. "There's an incredible amount of talent and energy in these young people, and they truly deserve our help."

Last year, LANSCE gave $8,000 in scholarships to 19 students, and awards ranged from $250 to $500. Scholarship funds come from annual patent royalties derived from LANSCE-developed technologies.

Scholarship recipients are studying electrical, computer and mechanical engineering; accounting; elementary education; computer electronics; wildlife science; environmental science; welding; education; and microelectronics.

LANSCE managers nominated students they felt most deserved financial help with their education's. Criteria used included the students' overall performances and contributions to their respective groups and academic promise. Approximately 85 high school, undergraduate, graduate and other students work at LANSCE.
