The Defined Benefit Eligible Disability Program (DBED) provides disability income to those who experience a disability that is permanent or expected to last 12 months or longer.
Eligibility for DBED is based on type of appointment for employment. DBED benefits are available only to eligible employees who properly elected TCP1 and have at least 5 years of service credit at time of disability application.
You may not enroll in DBED as a plan option, but instead, would apply for it while on disability.
LANS DBED benefit income is calculated differently than short-term disability or supplemental disability—it is based on service credit and final salary. LANS provides benefits for qualified members with at least five years of service credit.
For information on DBED coverage, please review the LANS Defined Benefit Eligible Disability Program plan summary (pdf) “Calculating Your Benefit” section. DBED is not meant to be a retirement benefit but a replacement benefit until you are eligible to retire.
If you are approved for DBED, you may be eligible to continue your LANS medical, dental, and/or legal coverage through Hewitt and Associates, the administrator for retiree benefits. Please contact the Benefits Disability Office at 667-1203 for more information.
