Individual Contributor Nomination Form - Form 1831 (pdf)
I am nominating David S, the Los Alamos Industrial Fellow at PPG Industries, for a Distinguished Performance Award. David has proved himself to be the very most successful Industrial Fellow to date since the program began in FY95.
The LANL-PPG partnership, which he is responsible for developing, now provides the model for interactions through the Industrial Fellow Program. David has carefully nurtured a long-term partnership, which combines
His work has required exceptional dedication and diplomacy as well as scientific creativity and credibility.
Below are two examples of how David's years of intelligent, patient and creative Industrial Fellow work have strengthened core Laboratory programs.
Polymer-Degradation:
In 1998, a Los Alamos team, headed by Mark S (MST- 7), received $3M
(over 3 years) in DOE DP IP (now Defense Programs Technology Partnership
Program - DP TPP) to study polymer degradation. Polymer degradation
is importAnt for predicting the aging behavior of a wide variety
of plastics, for examples, the estane binder of the high explosives
in nuclear weapons, and the outer paint coats of automobiles. DP
TPP funds require signed CRADAS with industrial partners, and initially
three companies, including PPG Industries, intended to do so.
David S played a major role in developing the initial Pro contribution to this effort, and ended by having Pro save a third of the project when the third company suddenly pulled out. He wrote the first drafts of the Pro statement of work on a few days notice.
