Amphetamines
Also known as Speed, Crank, Crystal, Go, Methedrine, Dexedrine, Benzedrine, Ice*, etc.
Amphetamines include stimulants and inhalants. They can be taken orally, sniffed, smoked, inhaled or injected. Pharmaceutical companies make virtually all of the amphetamines in this country.
Reasons for abuse -
- Increased alertness
- Relieves fatigue
- Feel stronger and more decisive
- Counteract "down" feeling of tranquilizers or alcohol
But did you know that -
- Amphetamines can increase heart and respiratory rates.
- Amphetamines can cause elevated blood pressure.
- Dilated pupils and decreased appetite are side effects.
- High doses may cause irregular heartbeat, loss of coordination, collapse.
- Amphetamines may cause increased perspiration, blurred vision, dizziness, a feeling of restlessness, anxiety, and delusions.
Indications of possible misuse of amphetamines:
- Excessive activity, talkativeness, irritability.
- Argumentativeness or nervousness.
- Long periods without sleep or eating.
* Ice is to amphetamines what crack is to cocaine:
- It is deadly.
- It is smoked.
- Users get an extreme high.
- Its effect often lasts more than 20 hours.
- Some first-time users have died of a stroke or heart attack.
