Material Transfer Agreement (MTA)
Materials are typically the starting point, or at least play a crucial role in creating new innovations. As a result, the use of materials is potentially very valuable for generating novel intellectual property. The MTA defines the intellectual property rights of the provider and the recipient with respect to the materials and any derivatives. Biological materials, such as reagents, cell lines, plasmids, and vectors, are the most frequently transferred materials, but MTAs may also be used for other types of materials, such as chemical compounds and even some types of software.
On this page you will find MTAs for commonly requested materials. The page is organized by Principal Investigator (PI). Because LANL is a contractor of the U.S. government, the Laboratory must follow rules and regulations mandated by the Department of Energy. These regulations stipulate the following:
- LANL cannot distribute any material to countries deemed “sensitive” by the U.S. government.
- All requests from foreign entities must be processed for export control approval.
- Use, distribution, and destruction of materials must adhere to the regulations stipulated within the MTA.

Instructions
Download the appropriate MTA for the material you are requesting. Complete the MTA in its entirety. Any missing information could result in delayed processing.
For foreign entities, be sure to complete both Appendix A and Appendix B of the MTA.
Once you have obtained the appropriate signature, either fax copy of the MTA to 1-505-665-0154 (Attn: MTA Processing) or email a scanned copy of the MTA to mta@lanl.gov.
