Acceptable Knowledge - Repository Science (EES-12)

EES-12 is a partner of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant's (WIPP) Central Characterization Project acceptable knowledge (AK) team in a collaborative effort to perform the initial characterization of all transuranic waste destined for WIPP by locating, reviewing, and summarizing relevant AK documentation from around the Department of Energy complex.

Essential for meeting WIPP regulatory requirements, AK includes information about the waste generation process and historical chemical, physical, and isotopic sampling/analysis data. Sources include standard operating procedures, safety analysis reports, waste packaging/disposal logs, spreadsheets, databases, and interviews with personnel familiar with site transuranic waste generating processes/management.

EES-12 brings wide-ranging expertise to this work, including chemistry; engineering; environmental science, policy, and management; project management; and corporate knowledge of characterization techniques and issues, WIPP regulatory activities/changes, and waste generator site certification history dating back to before the opening of WIPP.
