Science Education Community Service Time helps sustain and strengthen community partnerships that connect the Laboratory with our northern New Mexico neighbors.
Based on Lab policy P730-5 (pdf) Science Education Community Service Time is time off with pay that may be granted to LANS full-time or part-time employees, at the discretion of their supervisors of up to 32 hours per fiscal year.

Science education activities that qualify for community service time include judging science fairs; helping with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related career fairs; giving STEM-related talks and demonstrations in classrooms and at schools; and tutoring as part of an organized program.

1. To apply for Community Service Time, Click Here and fill out the form.
2. The request will be routed to your manager for approval. If your manager approves, you will receive an e-mail notification that you can participate in the activity.
3. When it comes time to post your community service time in the Oracle time and labor system, enter the code you were given in you time-approved e-mail.

The FY11 value of 3,105 employee participants for science education community service in 117 different programs was $286,653*.

*The total cost estimate is calculated using LANL salary band range $65K - $80K plus fringe benefits, infrastructure tax and Associate Director (AD) tax to determine per hour estimate of $65.72 for Community Service time. Community service time hours of 3,612 multiplied by $65.72.
