New Mexico Airlines begins service on April 8 with flights between Los Alamos County Airport and the Albuquerque International Sunport. Not only is the service cost effective for travel to and from the airport, but employees of the Lab and Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque can also save time by using the service for day meetings at either location.

The service is available to the public for the same price charged to government employees: $49 each way, including taxes and fees.

To introduce the service, Los Alamos County Airport is holding an open house in conjunction with New Mexico Airlines on Friday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. People can talk to airline representatives, tour one of the Cessna Caravan nine-seat, propeller airplanes to be used and have a chance to win two round-trip tickets.

Initially, the schedule is for three daily roundtrips on weekdays and once daily roundtrips on weekends. Los Alamos County airport manager Peter Soderquist says frequency and times will be adjusted based on demand, which he believes could eventually exceed 20,000 flights a year.

The service evolved from a partnership between the Lab, Los Alamos County and New Mexico Airlines. The U.S. Department of Transportation provided partial funding as part of its Small Community Air Service Development program. Los Alamos has not had air service to Albuquerque since 1996.
