The global climate fluctuates endlessly, supporting plant life on one place, then destroying it in another. Scientists track these changes, seeking to assess their impact on global ecosystems.

Dave Breshears' research has focused on shifts in vegetation at the boundaries between ecosystems. These boundaries (called ecotones) respond quickly to changes in climate and are thus key to understanding long-term ecosystem change.
