What goes on deep inside the earth? For years, scientists assumed that the earth's interior did little to shape its exterior—the crust that we walk around on. Carl Gable has turned that theory on its head with the discovery of "storms" that occur deep in the earth's mantle.

Gable used powerful computer simulations to discover these storms, massive events that can reroute tectonic plates and change the earth's surface.
