In the early morning of August 19, 2000, a gas line exploded in southeastern New Mexico, killing 11 campers. The blast left little behind beyond a huge fire and a mammoth crater.

Without surviving witnesses, a team of seismic investigators turned to hard data to analyze the blast. Using seismic data recorded at sites near the explosion, they pieced together a "fingerprint" of the event.
