In a Recovery Act project at Los Alamos National Laboratory, workers excavated a waste disposal site known as Material Disposal Area B (MDA-B).

A dome was erected over material disposal area to protect air quality during excavation.

LANL completed excavation of MDA-B in September 2011 thanks to American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding.

Example Excavation: MDA B

Material Disposal Area B (MDA-B) was used from 1944 to 1948 and is LANL's oldest waste disposal site.

The excavation site consisted of trenches that were dug to dispose of equipment, clothing, and other waste.

To ensure safety, the excavation was done inside large metal hangars.
